Are you looking to add an addition to your home? Wanting to remodel your kitchen or bathroom? Dreaming of building your own custom home?

A good place to start would be hiring an architect, but what does an architect even do?

What does an architect do?

One of the main jobs of an architect is to create drawings for a contractor to build a project. An architect is a professional building designer. They can take your idea of adding a new addition on your house and turn it into blueprints for a contractor to make it a reality.

What is an architect's process?
All architects will have a different process they go through but there is a general progression that almost all follow.
  • Pre-Design : This is where an architect finds out as much information from a client as possible. They find out about your site, your ideas, and your local zoning and land use restrictions. This is also where they can help you decide what all you need to have in your project.
  • Schematic Design (SD) : This is beginning stage of the design work. The architect will design a rough draft to layout your project.
  • Design Development (DD) : This step takes feedback from schematic design from the client and adjusts the design. The architect will get your approval on the layout and exterior materials. This helps solidify the design so the architect can go to the final step.
  • Construction Documents (CD) : This step is where the architect spends his time detailing all the fine details of the project. He will create a set of documents to be permitted by the local jurisdiction. From there, there might be comments of things that need to be revised and resubmitted.
"The job of the architect today is to create beautiful buildings. That's all” - Philip Johnson

Having an architect on your team is crucial to design the building of your dreams. They go through rigorous schooling to get an architecture degree and even more rigorous testing after they complete school. They are the building experts and you can lean on them with any design questions or advice you need to get your project going.
